Context

The main priority area is food and nutrition security. Tanzania currently produces enough food to feed the population, but the poorest and most marginalised families have limited access to food. 24% of households have food insecurity and 43% suffer from chronic malnutrition, which affects almost one in two children under the age of five.

Project goal and outputs

In this Nuffic project, where Q-Point is the lead consortium partner, the aim is to build capacity among FETA staff in the field of sustainable aquaculture training. The emphasis is on practical training in cage and pond systems, production of quality fish seeds (hatchery technology) and quality feeds. This significantly improves the service delivery and functioning of the organisation.

Value chain management, market-driven value addition and entrepreneurship are part of the topics in the training. The training focuses on technical skills for staff, teachers and lecturers of FETA Nyegezi Campus and FETA Kigoma.

Active participation of the trainees is asked, via the principle ‘learning by doing’. We use workshops (tasks), group work and discussions and carry out practical work at the involved fish farms, hatcheries, feed facilities and FETA institutions.

We also provide online training and support, taking into account the current COVID-19 situation as well as the future.

Gender parity is ensured by selecting 50% female and 50% male participants.

Training contents:

Low-cost basic and innovative solutions and technologies that are directly applicable to the existing fish farming systems (hatchery, ponds and cages), that fit the current situation.
Value chain development by drawing on locally available resources for feed and seeds. Bongo Samaki has extensive experience in making feed from local resources and has a feed facility available for trials and demonstrations.
