The involved institution

The project is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with sites in Busia and Bomet. With nearly 70% of its members managing farms and agricultural enterprises, Hand in Hand considers environmental sustainability an essential contribution to business survival and better livelihoods.

Mission

Their goal is to improve the environmental sustainability of all Hand in Hand programmes. To achieve this, it is crucial to strengthen approaches and capacities in regenerative agriculture and circular economy. Hand in Hand has made good progress in integrating climate resilience into its programmes. Still, a more ambitious approach is needed to ensure sustainable production and greater resilience among rural members.

Hand in Hand’s long-term vision is to promote profitable businesses and directly support a healthy environmental ecosystem that contributes to the resilience of such businesses.

Project goal and outputs

Q-Point B.V. is currently developing a curriculum on regenerative agriculture and circular economy as an output of the On the Farm and Beyond project in Kenya: Growing Hand in Hand’s capacity for impact through sustainable agriculture.

The purpose of this in-depth curriculum is to strengthen the technical training capacity of the Hand in Hand’s staff and the knowledge base of the member farmers, in embracing regenerative and circular economy practices. It will bridge the existing gap, i.e., Hand in Hand’s limited and localised training capacity and materials to enable the organisation to build its members’ capacity in a meaningful way.

These materials are rooted in Hand in Hand’s new circular economy and farmer-centred regenerative agriculture strategy and adopt a landscape management approach. The curriculum will be validated with trainers and 1,600 farmers (80% women, 40% youth) in two target counties: Busia and Bomet.
