Training: Postharvest Management for Export in Kenya
Colleagues Fabienne and Feline conducted a Postharvest Management training in the Nuffic project “Market driven training programs for the horticultural sector in Kenya”.
The first two days, Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya members and teachers of Kenya School Of Agriculture came together, to strengthen the relationship between the private sector and education. The focus of the training was on refreshing knowledge of postharvest management. More importantly, the floor was opened for sharing experiences and common challenges, resulting in helpful advice from participants to each other, and finding solutions together. We were also able to visit one of the mobile cold storage unit hubs of SokoFresh™, which is a social enterprise aiming to reduce postharvest losses in Kenya.
After these two days, we continued the training with the teachers of Kenya School of Agriculture. Together, we translated the interests of the stakeholders in the fresh produce value chains into suitable training materials that can be adopted into the existing curriculum. Finally, best postharvest practice guides were created for a few specific crops. Kenya School of Agriculture can distribute these to stakeholders in the value chain, and strengthen their relationship with the private sector. All to fit the aim of the project: create market-driving training programs!
