Monday 12 October was World Algae Day!

A great opportunity to highlight the enormous potential of microalgae. These tiny organisms play a vital role in our ecosystem and offer exciting opportunities for sustainable applications in areas such as food production and biotechnology.

Exciting progress has also been made at Algaeholix (Pty) Ltd! Over the past year, Linki Nel has made significant advances in developing a horizontal photobioreactor (PBR) system for microalgae production. Recent TU Delft graduate Didier van Citters has made an important contribution to this work.

Meanwhile, Yolandé Inglis is working on the development of an ISO 22000 food safety management system. Our Q-Point colleague Maaike Broeksma will be supporting AlgaeHolix with the commercialisation and marketing of its future microalgae production.

From technological innovation to sustainable production and market applications, it’s great to be working together on these developments as part of the SBIR in Developing Markets – RVO programme!
