Context
Kenya is a global leader in the export of horticultural products, including flowers, vegetables, and fruits. Europe, and particularly the Netherlands, is a key export destination. However, the current reliance on air freight poses challenges such as high costs and environmental impacts. While sea freight presents a more sustainable alternative, its uptake remains limited due to logistical complexities, such as maintaining high-quality expectations and longer transit times.
The Dutch government has actively supported the development of sea freight logistics in Kenya, recently formalising this commitment through a Memorandum of Understanding and the introduction of a combined “combi-track” strategy. This approach seeks to align development cooperation with trade and investment goals.
This project enhances coordination and visibility within the agro-logistics combi-track in Kenya by leveraging stakeholder insights and practice-based learning. It promotes system-wide improvements, new partnerships, and stronger logistical infrastructure for sustainable export development.
Project goal and outputs
The project aims to enhance the effectiveness of Kenya’s agro-logistics combi-track through:
- Expanding networks and stakeholder engagement.
- Increasing visibility of Dutch contributions and results.
- Facilitating new initiatives and partnerships.
- Providing actionable business development insights.
Key outputs include stakeholder mappings, communication strategies, case studies, a stakeholder database, facilitation of round table discussions, first-mile bottleneck analysis, and strategic recommendations.
