Context

This Tailor-Made Training strengthens Algeria’s horticultural sector by addressing urgent challenges related to water scarcity, limited technology adoption, and low productivity in greenhouse farming. While Algeria has over half a million hectares of horticultural land, including 21,000 hectares of greenhouse production, many growers rely on basic technologies and face issues such as soil-borne diseases, minimal crop rotation, and climate stress.

The training directly aligns with Algeria’s national priorities to modernize agriculture, improve food security, and reduce dependency on imports. Stakeholders from public institutions, private companies, educational institutes, and the farming community will gain new knowledge on sustainable greenhouse systems, climate-smart agriculture, irrigation innovations, and value-chain improvement.

The program consists of a two-day introductory training in Algeria, a one-week intensive training and field visit program in the Netherlands, and an online follow-up session. Visits to leading Dutch horticultural organizations, including Bosman van Zaal, World Horti Center, Tomato World, Naktuinbouw, seed companies, substrate suppliers, greenhouse research centers (WUR Bleiswijk, Delphy), and educational institutes as InHolland, will provide participants with practical exposure to high-quality technologies and sustainable cultivation methods. The training concludes with tailored action plans and ongoing support to ensure successful application in Algeria.
