GlobalG.A.P. and safe production of fruits & vegetables in Tanzania

Colleagues Alma and Feline were happy to travel to Iringa, Tanzania to provide training in the OKP TMT project: Sustainable horticultural production (Tanzania OKP TMT+ 2300038).

Hosted by Green Valley Agro, we welcomed a diverse group of participants which included farmers, teachers, and extension workers.

What was the training about?

Together we focused on the application of Good Agriculture Practices, specifically adhering to the requirements of the GlobalG.A.P. standard. All to contribute to the safe production of fruits and vegetables in Tanzania.

Topics addressed were:

  • Microbiological, chemical and physical hazards
  • Integrated Pest Management
  • Safe use of chemical Plant Protection Products (PPP) including a demonstration on how to wear protective cloths
  • Safe storage of chemical PPPs and waste management of empty PPP containers
  • Residue analysis and Maximum Residue Limits (MRL)
  • Record-keeping practices
  • Risks in the use of water
  • Basics in post-harvest management

The participants were the highlight of the training session, as they were very active and eager to learn. Lots of experiences were shared within the group. The quote “Alone we are smart, together we are brilliant” thus applies very well to this group. Therefore, farmers can apply the strengthened skills and knowledge at their farms, and the teachers and extension workers can share the knowledge and skills with others.

Just as bacteria tend to spread fast under the right circumstances, we trust that the participants will enhance the fast spreading of the knowledge and skills acquired in the training.
